ABOUT US

IMG_8457-3.jpg
The business is located on farmland that has been in the Penn family since early 1800’s.  The Kentucky land was granted to Colonel Gabriel Penn for military service in Virginia during the Revolutionary War.  Gabriel’s son, James, moved to Kentucky to settle this land.  The Penn’s cured hams for themselves.
The Penn family opened Penn’s Store in Mannsville, Kentucky in the mid 1800’s. The family provided hams to retail in the store.  In the 1950’s, Donald Penn attended college in Bowling Green, Kentucky.  While there, he peddled country hams for extra money.  He realized there was a market for country ham and officially began Penn Country Hams in 1959.  Penn’s also make their own sausage, cure side meat (bacon), and jowl.   Penn’s is a five-generation family business that has specialized in pork.

Penn’s hope to continue to provide this family owned/operated business that has the down-home atmosphere that customers love.  Most retail customers say that part of the appeal of the business is the travel to the family farm located ten miles outside of Campbellsville, in Taylor County, Kentucky.  2019 marked the 60th anniversary of the official Penn Country Ham business.  Penn’s is currently expanding to create more product and precise packaging to provide for our customer’s growing needs.
